Clonmel is steeped in a hidden history which is waiting to be explored, including the site of the famous Cromwellian siege, its town walls and the county museum.
Discover how the Butlers of Ormond gained power and influence with almost every large town of Tipperary including Roscrea. There is with a strong connection to Roscrea and 'Black Tom' Butler, the 10th earl of Ormond who returned home from England to take control of Roscrea. Daniels has at his disposal an extraordinarily high-profile cast: Whitaker makes Gaines a gawkish, slightly fuddy-duddy plodder of a man—a frustratingly passive persona that grows on the viewer as his story unfolds—and Winfrey is persuasive, even moving, as his wry and troubled wife.
King were great; Kennedy was charming and Nixon was crazy; the Black Panthers were just a bit too radical.
This is film-as-history-textbook, in the mold of movies such as Forrest Gump. But the public-affairs story that it offers is so boilerplate as to seem drained of life.
